Stop 26 of 26
The grand finale. A pub has been on this site since 1765, but at 11pm on 6 December 1944, a V2 missile destroyed the then-Red Lion, killing eighteen people and injuring around forty. The building was rebuilt in 1958 and went through several names — Henry Holland, after the Georgian architect — before becoming The Duchess in 2022, a nod to the BBC drama The Duchess of Duke Street. It sits opposite the Duke Street entrance to Selfridges, high-ceilinged and wood-panelled. It closes at midnight, which gives you breathing room. If you've made it here, you've done all 26. We can say from experience that the urge to continue to Soho afterwards is considerably weaker than you'd expect.
