First licensed in 1730 as the Bricklayers Arms, rebuilt in 1889 by James Watney & Co to designs by Thomas Verity — the same architect who did the exterior of the pavilion at Lord's. The first Duke of Westminster insisted it be renamed the Audley Hotel as a condition of the rebuild. It's Grade II listed, all red brick and pink terracotta outside, polished wood and plasterwork inside. Look for the original double-faced clock and the wooden fireplace inscribed with the Latin “salve.” The Swiss art dealers Iwan and Manuela Wirth took over the lease and commissioned a ceiling work by the late Dame Phyllida Barlow. Pints are not cheap. You are in Mayfair.
